Boating
The best way to explore the Alde Feanen is by boat. And, of course, you experience the area best using a rowing boat, a quiet (electric) boat or a canoe. The greater part of the Alde Feanen is open to visitors and, in collaboration with the Marrekrite, we have placed jetties where you can moor your craft and spend the night. So please do not moor in the reed, because although reed is a good protective cover for the banks, it is extremely vulnerable to damage! You can also spend the night with your boat in one of the yacht harbours, a number of which have collection points for dirty water.
Sailing
You can sail wonderfully well on the large lakes - the Grutte Krite ad the Saiterpetten - but the smaller channels are less suited for sailing because of their limited depth and the reed and trees growing along the banks. The wet woodlands in particular will take the wind out of your sails.
Small-scale boat touring
A number of areas have been specially opened for (small) rowing boats and canoes. In one of these spots (Neeltsjemuoisgat) a transfer place has been made for canoes so that you can easily get onto the Saiterpetten.
Access
The closed areas are not freely accessible. There are also areas which are to be avoided in the autumn-winter period (November to February inclusive) and in the breeding season (1st March to 15th May inclusive): these are the Grutte Krite and the Saiterpetten in the autumn-winter period because of the birds nesting there, and in the breeding season you are not allowed into the Neeltsjemuoisgat, De Ielterm and De Ald Headamsleat.
Supervision
The Fryske Gea supervisors and police officers patrol regularly to supervise goings-on in the area. So watch your speed on the water (maximum 6 km per hour) so that you don't damage the banks - and look out for warning signs wherever you are boating. The supervisors are also quite happy to answer any questions you may have: they know the area like the back of their hand.
Renting boats
Around the Alde Feanen there are several boat hire firms. You can rent almost anything that floats: from canoe via rowing boat and sailboat to luxury yacht. For a trip lasting a couple of hours to a long holiday.

Round trips
Naturally you can also visit the Alde Feanen on board a round-trip boat or water bus (rondvaartboot). There are various companies in Earnewâld and the surrounding villages that run these trips.
