In the heart of the province of Friesland, the Netherlands, in the triangle formed by Heerenveen, Drachten and Leeuwarden, is the 4000-hectare peat bog known as De Alde Feanen (the Old Fens). It possesses a wonderful variety of natural features, with lakes, marsh ponds, pools left over from peat workings, reedbeds, scrubland, rough thickets and wet woodland. There are also quaking bogs, sphagnum-reed marshes, water meadows and, in the spring, yellow marsh marigold hayfields. The latter types of landscape in particular are scarce and their very existence is threatened.
This wide expanse of water can best be explored by boat. But the walker or cyclist can also experience the atmosphere. And... of course, you are always most welcome!
